Of Mice and Men coursework?

This is my introduction for my coursework,

'How does Steinbeck Create Sympathy for Lennie?'

The introduction must include:

- Introduce the book and the author

- Discuss key themes

- Discuss historical context (summarise)

I am wondering if this can be improved, if so please state your changes:

John Steinbeck wrote 'Of Mice and Men' in 1937. It is set in the preceding decade - a period of economic depression and harsh living conditions and follows the story of two migrant farm workers, Lennie and George. Their relationship is central to the book and, through this it explores some of the key themes: Friendship, loneliness, responsibility and hope. However, it is through the unusual character of Lennie that Steinbeck manages to gain the readers sympathy and interest to ensure the novel's continued presence on the classics list.

Improvements are very aprecciated :)

I'm not sure how long this should be..if this should be about a paragraph, as in it's the start of an essay, it's fine. Otherwise, I almost think it looks like the teacher/prof. wants more of a short essay.

i.e. Where it says discuss key themes, I assume they want at least a couple of sentences on each theme and how they are used to set up Lennie as a character. Where it says discuss historical context go into why friendship, loneliness, responsibility, and hope matter in an unstable world like that of the Great Depression in the Dust Bowl. about the same length you have now on the book and the author should suffice for this short essay format.

You should mention the fact that in the future they themselves would like their own farm!
